SAMSON, Ala. — It was deathly still inside the brick home Lisa McLendon shared with her 28-year-old son, save for the flames that crackled as her body he set aflame lay on a smoldering couch under a heap of burning clothes.

Outside, Michael McLendon roared out of their shady driveway and headed toward town in a dark red Mitsubishi Eclipse. He had four guns, more than 200 rounds of ammunition and had composed hand-scribbled lists ticking off people and places he thought had it out for him.

Hell was on its way to McLendon's old hometown Tuesday. In less than an hour, he would shed enough blood across rural Alabama to become the state's most prolific killer. The peace of a warm, almost idyllic Southern afternoon was about to be shattered by the sound of gunfire.

Sandy Tanner looked toward her neighbor's small frame home near the corner of Pullum Street around 4 p.m. when she heard the first blast. It wasn't a firecracker, and something was wrong. The one-time truck driver headed toward the noise despite the danger, halfway between a walk and a run.

Bang! Bang!

The shots kept coming, about 15 in all, then stopped. She was already dialing 911 when a second burst of about nine more rang out. Suddenly, there was the Eclipse, kicking up dust on the narrow residential street. The driver looked straight at her.

"It was almost like looking in the devil's eyes," she recalled.

The car pulled away, and Tanner could barely grasp the carnage left on her neighbor's porch. McLendon's uncle, 55-year-old James Alford White, was dead, face down in a spreading pool of blood. McLendon's grandmother, 74-year-old Virginia White, was dead in the doorway of her adjoining trailer.

Two cousins' corpses lay near White's body. A young mother from across the street, Andrea Myers, was slumped on a porch swing where she had been chatting only moments before. At her feet was her 18-month-old daughter, Corrine Gracy, silent.

"Please, please," Tanner pleaded frantically, touching the toddler's arm as if to will her to live. It was too late.

The piercing wail of a baby snapped Tanner back into reality. The woman's other child, 4-month-old Ella, was hurt and crying in the arms of another neighbor. In the distance, screaming sirens grew louder as they approached Pullum Street.

The Mitsubishi zoomed into the small town of Samson with its window rolled down, a gun sticking out. With his relatives dead, McLendon was set to turn the town where he grew up and played baseball into a random shooting gallery, for a reason no one but he understands.

He struggled to keep a job over the years, but everyone who knew him said he never seemed troubled. He'd fought with relatives over a family Bible recently, and his mother had been suspended from her job at a meat and egg plant. He'd been listing co-workers who he didn't like in a notebook at home, writing that one had made him clean the meat grinder or another had reported him for not wearing ear plugs. But none of it seemed to be a clue that he'd wind up terrorizing his town.

A bullet hit discount store worker James Irvin Starling as he was walking on Wise Street to his sister-in-law's house. With the 24-year-old father of two dying along the street, McLendon turned onto Main Street, the center of life in the 2,000-strong Bible Belt community.

Everybody in town goes to the Big Little Store, and Sonja Smith, 43, had stopped by for gas. She went inside briefly and came out, walking unknowingly into McLendon's path.

The Mitsubishi rolled slowly through the parking lot, the driver firing rat-a-tat blasts. Smith died in the hail of lead, halfway between the front door and the gas pumps, and another man was wounded.

McLendon kept going. He drove through the heart of downtown, spraying bullets this way and that. Slugs slammed into the window of a hardware store as he drove southeast toward the town of Geneva, about 12 miles away.

Bruce Malloy, the 51-year-old head of maintenance at Brooks Peanut Co., was in a vehicle on Alabama 52 when the Mitsubishi sped his way. Nearby, more ambulances and police cars were racing through town as authorities tried to figure out what was going on.

Malloy was dead. McLendon never even stopped.

News of what happened in Samson was spreading like a virus over the static of police radios and screaming 911 calls, and officers knew they had to stop the Mitsubishi. Geneva police came up with an idea: They'd try to use their vehicles to stop McLendon and end the rampage.

At 4:06 p.m. - 36 minutes after the fire was reported at McLendon's house - the law finally caught up with the Mitsubishi on Alabama 52 between Samson and Geneva, a town of about 5,000 people dotted with small manufacturing plants and surrounded by farmland and scrub forest.

Stunned onlookers heard a barrage of gunfire, screeching tires and revving engines right in front of the town's Wal-Mart store as McLendon blew through with his foot to the floor, one hand on the wheel and another on a gun.

Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!

McLendon fired once at State Trooper Mike Gillis, then again and again. Glass whizzed through his patrol car, struck the vehicle with a thud seven times. Gillis kept speeding, his sights locked firmly on McLendon. A second officer was hurt by flying glass when bullets cut through his car, and Geneva Police Chief Frankie Lindsey took a bullet to the shoulder.

"It happened so quick," Lindsey said later. "It was the loudest burst of fire I've ever heard."

The sports car kept going to Maple Avenue, then on to Alabama 27. McLendon had driven the same way before to his former job at Reliable Products, which fabricates metal goods in a big steel building on the outskirts of town.

The car veered into the plant's parking lot. There was more shooting, this time between McLendon, a Geneva County sheriff's deputy and a state game officer who followed him to the plant where he had once worked. He walked inside one last time, and would never leave again.

After 24 miles, with 10 people dead and more than 200 rounds fired, McLendon saved one last bullet for himself. Bang! Then it was quiet.

Dumb Criminal of the Year

A Charlotte, NC, man having purchased a case of very rare, very expensive cigars, insured them against fire among other things. Within a month, having smoked his entire stockpile of cigars and without having made even his first premium payment on the policy, the man filed a claim against the insurance company. In his claim, the man stated the cigars were lost "in a series of small fires." The insurance company refused to pay, citing the obvious reason that the man had consumed the cigars in the normal fashion. The man sued....and won. In delivering the ruling the judge agreeing that the claim was frivolous, stated nevertheless that the man held a policy from the company in which it had warranted that the cigars were insurable and also guaranteed that it would insure against fire, without defining what it considered to be "unacceptable fire," and was obligated to pay the claim. Rather than endure a lengthy and costly appeal process the insurance company accepted the ruling and paid the man $15,000 for the rare cigars he lost in "the fires." After the man cashed the check, however, the company had him arrested on 24 counts of arson. With his own insurance claim and testimony from the previous case being used against him, the man was convicted of intentionally burning his insured property and sentenced to 24 months in jail and a $24,000 fine.

New York Police Release Report after Wal-Mart Death

Rope lines, numbered tickets and walkie-talkies for store employees could help control frenzied bargain-hunters, police said in a report issued after a Wal-Mart worker was killed in a Black Friday stampede.

Nassau County police released recommendations Wednesday, two weeks after meeting with 75 Long Island retailers about how to stage major sales events safely.

Retailers and police had debated who should take the lead on securing discount-hungry crowds after temporary Wal-Mart worker Jdimytai Damour was trampled to death the day after Thanksgiving in Valley Stream.

The report said that while county police would respond if needed, "the responsibility for the security and control of these sales events rests with the store. Store administrators should never market a sales event without having a plan, and the proper resources to manage it."

A pre-dawn horde of about 2,000 shoppers broke down the electronic doors to the Wal-Mart and rushed past Damour, a 6-foot-5, 270-pound man stationed near the entrance to assist with crowd control. At least four other people were hurt.

The police report said stores should plan security for sales events months in advance, assign enough staffers to manage expected customer traffic and train workers before the event.

Police said in the days after the stampede that Damour, 34, had no experience with crowd control and had been hired a week earlier from a temporary agency. He died of asphyxiation after being crushed by the crowd, authorities said.

The report recommended setting up barricades or rope lines to manage crowds before the sale, handing out wristbands or numbered tickets to arriving customers, positioning store employees in the parking lot and providing them radios to share information.

Patrons should enter the stores in smaller groups, not all at once; retailers should have maps showing where to find the hottest sales items, and patrons should be kept out once the store reaches maximum occupancy, the report said.

Stores should call police if crowds become unruly and plan whom to call in a medical emergency, but they should also have defibrillators on hand and staffers trained to use them, the report said.

"We look forward to continuing to work with local enforcement to make our safety measures even stronger in the future," Wal-Mart Stores Inc. spokesman Lorenzo Lopez said in a statement Thursday.

LAPD Officers Attacked 527 Times in 2008

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 29, 2008 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Los Angeles police officers continued to be the targets of violence in 2008 as officers were reported to be attacked in 527 instances during the past 12 months.

Included in that figure is the first murder of a SWAT officer in the department's history. Officers were shot at a total of 14 times during the year.

"These are not exchanges of gunfire between criminals and officers," said Paul M. Weber, president of the Los Angeles Police Protective League. "These are cold-blooded attempts to murder unsuspecting officers without any warning."
Los Angeles SWAT Officer Randal David Simmons, a 27-year veteran of the department, was shot and killed when he entered the home of an armed man during a standoff in February.

In addition to the shootings, LAPD officers were also assaulted by suspects wielding deadly weapons in 168 cases and were the victims of battery (physical altercation) 358 times in 2008.

"Los Angeles is a city protected by dedicated LAPD officers, who deserve all the tools and all the support the community can possibly provide," Weber said. "The LAPPL asks the public and our community leaders to continue to support our officers and make sure that criminals do not deter them from doing their work to make Los Angeles the safest big city in America."

"Public safety requires a strong two-way partnership. We need to make it clear that Los Angeles is a city in which violence on law enforcement is never tolerated, and that those who threaten our police officers threaten our own communities," Weber said.

Pair Arrested On Drug Charge After Accidentally Texting Cop

LONGVIEW -- A text message to a Longview police officer led to a 24-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman being arrested and charged with possession of marijuana.

Officer Jason Hampton received a text message from "Sam" about 10:15 p.m. Tuesday "in reference to a drug deal," according to a news release from the Longview Police Department.

"It was apparent that 'Sam' sent the message to the wrong phone number," the news release stated. "Officer Hampton, who was off duty, contacted dispatch and advised them of the situation."

According to the news release, the officer set up a meeting with "Sam" at a Chase Bank on West Loop 281.

When "Sam" arrived to meet with Hampton, officers found a bag containing 4.495 ounces of marijuana inside the vehicle, according to the news release. The news release stated that the driver, Samuel Odom, and passenger, Sarah Gillette, were arrested and taken to the Gregg County Jail. Both were charged with possession of marijuana.

According to the jail, Odom had a $5,500 bond, and Gillette had a $5,000 bond.
Both were released Wednesday.
Odom also had warrants from Upshur County, according to the news release.

New Police Taser Prototype

One of the most interesting aspects of Urban Shield— the massive 48-hour SWAT exercise sponsored by the Alameda County (Calif.) Sheriff’s Department.—is that it gives tactical teams a chance to try out some new products and technologies.

One of the coolest technologies used during this year’s event was the TASER Shockwave Area Denial System.

On orientation day, I watched the Newark, Calif., SWAT team receive a briefing on the Shockwave ADS.

The Shockwave ADS looks a lot like a claymore mine from a science fiction movie, but it’s really just an array of TASER cartridges. So it’s non-lethal. But that doesn’t mean it won’t ruin your day if you happen to be someplace you shouldn’t or participating in say…a prison riot.

The Shockwave ADS consists of three tiers of six TASER cartridges. It works like this. The operator uses an activator system that is hard-wired into the Shockwave. If he pushes the trigger once, the first row of six cartridges fires and the rioters or trespassers get a 30-second ride. A second time, and the second row fires and a charge is sent back into the probes that are now sticking into the bad guys. A third time, and the third row and the first and second set of probes go active again. Finally, there’s an option for firing all three rows—18 cartridges—at once and incapacitating the target with a hail of probes.

During the jailbreak scenario at Urban Shield, each team used the Shockwave to quell the problem. So each team got hands-on time with the device. The one thing they quickly learned was to be on the other side of it when it fires.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office the deputies disguised as Christmas characters patrolled a single intersection from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Tuesday and dolled out 50 tickets -- each carrying a fine of $201 -- for running red lights, WKMG-TV, Orlando, Fla., reported Tuesday.

"We just want to keep everyone safe," the deputy dressed as the elf said.

"Last year in Orange County, there were 186 traffic fatalities -- probably about 45 percent of those were people running red lights or stop signs," Orange County Cmdr. Ken Wynne said.

Officials said the elf and Grinch would be patrolling other locations later Tuesday.

If you're not going to give the police your real name, you might not want to have it tattooed on your neck.

That's what St. Paul police say happened this morning.

Officers saw two men crossing a street, but not in a crosswalk, at Forest Street and Minnehaha Avenue about 12:50 a.m., according to a police report. Officers then saw them walking in the street, though there were sidewalks. Both acts violate St. Paul ordinances, the report said.

Police stopped the men and planned to warn them about the violations, the report said. One man was evasive about his identification, telling police he had never had a picture ID, according to the report.

"In an attempt to deceive officers, he gave the name Darnell Lewis," the report

There were five arrest warrants out for the 25-year-old St. Paul man, the report said. One was a felony warrant for parole violation, and four were misdemeanor warrants — two for no proof of insurance, one for driving after revocation and one for driving after suspension, according to the report.

Frazier was booked into the Ramsey County jail.

In 2002, Frazier pleaded guilty to the Sept. 20, 2001, burglary of an Arab-owned convenience store in St. Paul — a crime his accomplice told police was revenge for the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A New York City police officer is expected to be charged with beating and sodomizing a man with a police baton on a subway platform, an attorney for the officer said Monday.

A lawyer for Officer Richard Kern, 25, who is accused of being the leader in the assault, said his client has been ordered to surrender to police Tuesday for processing and arraignment.

Michael Mineo, 24, who works at a tattoo parlor, claims he was approached by several uniformed police officers in the early afternoon on October 15 near Brooklyn's Prospect Park on suspicion that he was smoking marijuana.

The officers followed Mineo into a nearby subway station, where they allegedly forced him to the ground and handcuffed him, he claims.

Mineo said he screamed in pain as something, which his lawyers later said was a baton, was forcibly shoved into his rectum.

The incident has sparked charges of police brutality and recalls the case of Abner Louima, a Haitian immigrant who was attacked with a broomstick in a Brooklyn police station in 1997.

The office of Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes declined to comment because the grand jury indictment was still sealed. It also was not immediately clear whether two other officers accused in the assault will be indicted.

Mineo's lawyer, Stephen Jackson, said Mineo suffers from his physical and emotional wounds but was "extremely pleased" by the news of the indictment.

"Mr. Mineo was the victim of a vicious sexual assault by New York City police," said Jackson. "He has a long way to make himself whole, if he is ever able to do that."

Kern's lawyer, John Patten, said Kern does not know what charges he may face but maintains his innocence. Kern and others accused in the case have been placed on modified assignment.

In the Louima case, one New York City police officer was sentenced to 30 years in prison for his role in the attack, and a second officer was given a five-year prison sentence for perjury.

Man shot 20 times by Boise police files excessive force suit

BOISE -- A man who was shot 20 times by Boise police this summer and claims officers used excessive force has filed a $5 million claim against the city.

Dorian Willes, the 30-year-old involved in the June 5 shooting, filed a tort claim with the city Tuesday.

According to a story in the Idaho Statesman, Willes was shot by two officers in the basement of a northside condominium after emerging from hiding and pointing a soldering gun at the officers.

Earlier this week, an independent prosecutor cleared the officers of any wrongdoing in the episode, and an unofficial internal investigation concluded the officers followed the department's deadly force policy.

But Willes says he has suffered permanent injuries, including loss of sight in one eye and kidney failure. He says medical bills have already reached $1 million.

Boise officials have 90 days to respond.

Well the holiday season is among us and while of i have nothing to major to report over the last couple shifts, i would like to point out some advise for those of you who think you can drink and then drive....DON'T.
There are many field sobriety tests in which a police officer can administer. While you may be able to do a couple of them, some are unpassable with alcohol in your system.
One common test is "the one leg stand". All one must do is lift one leg 6 inches off the ground, keeping that foot straight, keeping hands down at your sides, and while looking at the tip of your toe, count to thirty. A second test commonly administered is "the walk and turn". In this such test, one must take nine steps forward, pivot and take nine steps back. While doing this test, one must keep their head forward, hands at sides and take the steps in a heel-to-toe manner. A third test you might see is the "rhomburg test". This is nothing more than standing with your legs together, hands at your side, close your eyes, tilt your head backwards, and estimate 30 seconds. These first three tests all test your balance abilities. A fourth test is reciting the alphabet.
I don't think their is a need for a description here, although i'd like to point out that I don't have the testee start from the letter A. I usually ask to recite from D thru U or something like that. This is a better judgement on thier thinking skills.
Another commonly seen test is the finger to nose test, and the finger count. Both of which test your coordination skills.
A test that is impossible to get around is the horizontal gaze nostagmus. This is the test where you are told to follow the tip of a pen with your eyes only. When you are intoxicated, your eyes will bounce back and forth when you look all the way to your left or right. This is scientifically accepted test in the court system.

What can driving while intoxicated earn you? About $5,000-$10,000 in lawyer fees, having to spend 5 or 6 nights of your time in court, having to take drunk driving and alcohol rehab classes, fines from the court, fines from motor vehicle's, higher insurance rates, and the possibilty of killing yourself, a passenger, or another driver if you get into an accident. Are these risks worth not calling for a taxicab ride which might only cost you $20?

One subject was arrested last night on warrant. It was a slow night, as it was cold outside. Everyone had on their Northface coats and were bundled up. The guy we arrested said his Northface cost over $400. How do these perps pay so much for a Northface jacket, and they don't have jobs and can't pay their child support. Is a Northface jacket a prestige thing?

Well, seems the drugs are still flowing. Arrested a suspect who had 24 crack rocks and 15 grmas of marijuana. what is the big addiction to crack cocaine? crack cocaine is the biggest drug in my area. I don't see the appeal. It's mostly a homeless person's drug of choice.

The second arrested was a guy who had stolen license on his car. Thought the car was possibly stolen, but it turns out it was his car, but he stole the plates off the same exact car

Well as most know, the night before Thanksgiving is the busiest bar night of the year. This year came without exception. Early in my shift, i pulled a vehicle for a suspended registration. Turns out the passenger was smoking marijuana. So ew arested both subjects. While awaiting a tow truck for the Honda, an inventory search of the vehicle was conducted. In the trunk was over a half pound of marijuana. What a score that was. I fell sorry he lost his new Honda. Well later in the night, we had numerous fights at the local bar. One guy got his head split by a beer bottle. He then got into a fight with the police. What a mistake for him. Anyhow, i think the beer was flowing pretty heavy there as alot of kids were there as they were home for the holidays from college. After they go back to college, it should quiet down abit at the bars. Until next time...

Ok, my first tour back to work. I had my new uniform on and was fully equipped with taser and shotgun, and was eager to get out make an arrest. Fortunately for the bad guys, not much was going on today. One driver was stopped after leaving a drug prone location. It turned out his license was suspended, as he had three tickets he had not payed for. Well that was the first arest of the night. It wasnt a glorious one, but it counts as a misdemeanor. Second arrest came a couple hours later, after a wanted subject was spotted in the downtown area. Three other area cars were sent to the area. The subject got a little suspicious and dipped into a local shop. We went right in and got him without any incidents. The only ther excitement was dealing with an intoxicated homeless guy for three calls during the night. He finally left the area.

Christmas Tree is Up

Well we put up our christmas accessories this past weekend. We have a fake tree with the lights built in. We also have lights around the exterior and around some of the outdoor trees. In our front lawn is a lage inflatable snowman. We thought someone had stolen it last year, but found out it blown away from the wind. We are making sure to anchor it more securely this year. I can't wait for the first snowfall, as i love to roam around in the fluffly white stuff.

I just joined a new gas discount club, TheGasMasterDiscount. It is a very basic discount club and it works the same way as a Costco or a BJ's club. You can purchase up to $300 card per month. My card just came in and i filled up already. It works just like a regular Visa credit card, except for the savings. Gas here is currently $3.39 a gallon. So in reality, I only paid $2.71 per gallon. Not a bad deal. This membership club also has an online shopping mall where members can asve 20% on everything from t.v.'s to sneaker, to bed linens. Mall also sells vacation packages and you get 20% off all this as well. The mall is not online yet and they say it should be up by December.
